WHAT IS A MAMMOGRAM?

A mammogram is a low energy x-ray of the breast and is used to assess the breast tissue for any pathology.

DO I NEED AN APPOINTMENT?

Yes. Although the mammogram itself will not take very long, most Mammogram appointments may require you to attend for as long as 30 minutes. We ask if you could please call us to make an appointment or come in and arrange a suitable time.

Please refrain from wearing deodorant, anti-antiperspirant or powder on the day of your examination.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION:

Before your examination you must tell us if you:

  • Are pregnant, or suspect you are
  • Have any metal around the area being examined (e.g. piercings, necklaces, etc.)
  • Have had any previous surgery to the area being examined
  • Have any information you believe may be relevant to your examination
WHAT TO BRING:
  • Referral from your doctor.
  • Previous films and/or reports. If you have had a previous examination in any of our practices, these can be electronically retrieved and you do not need to bring them with you.
  • Method of including Medicare, Health or Pension Card.
  • For WorkCover claims, you will need the claim number, claim officer’s name and phone number, and any other relevant details.
WHO WILL DO MY MAMMOGRAM?

A qualified and specially trained female mammographer will always be present during your procedure.

WHAT WILL HAPPEN DURING MY MAMMOGRAM?

You will be asked to stand facing the mammogram machine and place your breast on the plate. Our female mammographer will position you to ensure the best images are possible. Once positioned, your breast will be compressed between two plates which might cause some slight discomfort. The mammographer will then walk behind a screen to take the x-ray. Most mammograms require 2 or more images to be taken of both breasts (depending on the patient), which will require you to be moved and repositioned multiple times by our mammographer.

The procedure normally takes 10-15 minutes. You can resume normal activity straight after having a mammogram.
